Walden Pond: 1.7 Miles of Thoreau's Backyard
Walden Pond: 1.7 Miles of Thoreau's Backyard
Walden Pond State Reservation in Concord, about 30 minutes west of Boston. A 1.7-mile loop hugging the water — pine, birch, damp earth smell. The pond reveals itself in stages: glimmer through trees, then a wide pale-green sheet reflecting sky. A marker shows Thoreau's cabin site along the shore.
Early autumn is the time. Air cools to that crisp clean bite, leaves deliver patient fire along the hillsides, crowds thin, and the pond surface becomes a mirror instead of a swimming stage. The water is startlingly clear for something this close to a major city.
Parking fills quickly on sunny weekends — arrive early or go weekday. The loop is easy, some roots and small inclines. Bring a towel to sit on. The historical marker deserves a few minutes. Thoreau's footprint is modest here but the echo carries. The pond hasn't changed, which was always his point.
